I have been madly busy working on the Yarthe Campaign Setting layout (which is almost done! Hurrah!) and getting my editor and beta readers lined up for the next 2 novels, which are finished bar the beta read & edit process. But! But, in the meantime and as a treat to myself, i took a few days off to make a little TTRPG supplement for Hallowe’en.
It’s a new patron (subclass) for the 5E & Core Fantasy Roleplaying (aka Project Black Flag or Tales of the Valiant, from Kobold Press) Warlock class, and the Witch class in the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game (first edition) & Pathfinder Second Edition. Warlocks are my favourite 5th edition class anyway, just for the roleplaying opportunities , and then I was having this conversation with a friend about parasol ants…
Parasol ants are a selection of ant species which have formed ocmmensal relationships with specific types of fungi. The ants farm the fungi in their nests, and bring suitable leaves & things for the fungus to ‘eat’, and the fungus produces food for the ants – which have evolved to only be able to eat that fungal food. (I am TL;DRing it, it’s more complicated than this, but neither you nor I care – and if you do, you can always go look it up, as I did over the last few days).
I thought, wouldn’t it be fun to have a warlock (or witch in pathfinder-speak; they’re basically the same class, with a few minor differences) whose patron was a fungus like that. It feeds you, nurtures you, gives you magic – and makes you utterly dependent on it. Do what the mushroom-god wants or maybe it won’t feed you today…
So I made the subclass, for each of the rulesets because I have a problem and am doing an entire campaign setting in all 3 rulesets anyway. So. Check it out, download a copy, let me know if you like it! Available on this site, on my publisher’s web store, or on DriveThruRPG and Itch.io. Free until Nov 1!
